Robert Gault notified me of a small warning in emubrk so I updated it.
USENET Meme
David Levine has started a new meme. Find and publish your earliest USENET post. Mine is from January 21, 1994. I sure wish it was more interesting:

Megan Extreme
Sunday, August 12 was suppose to be a special day for Megan and I. We went to California Extreme together. After driving about an hour to get to Parkside Hall in San Jose, I payed thirty dollars for me and fifteen for Megan to enter the event. All of the lights and sounds got her truly excited. After about an hour of playing games I had a horrible thought.
The day before Megan told me her pump had about 20 units of insulin available. She goes thru about 30 units a day and I tell her we will change the reservoir the next morning. It occurred to me, in the middle of a game that I never refilled the pump. I took a look at it and found she had 1 unit available for delivery. This is about enough for half an hour.
Being an hour away from home was not far enough for me to pack a full compliment pump supplies. All I packed was low food. I had nothing with me to refill the pump.
It is not acceptable for Megan to spend even a few hours without her pump. Since she was hungry and needed to eat, I needed to give her insulin to cover those carbohydrates. Plus, with the pump empty she is not getting her basil insulin so her blood glucose will almost immediately rise beyond acceptable levels. So we had to leave.
That morning she was not sure if California Extreme was going to be fun. But after only an hour she was having such a good time I felt horrible that I had to tell her we had to go. I was really hard on myself on the drive home. Just a little bit of planning and we would have been able to spend a half-day playing video games and pinball machines.
Open and close
What do you mean when you say a platform is closed?
On the many mailing lists I subscribe to I too often hear that the Mac OS is a closed platform. I usually calm myself down and repeat the mantra, “He’s prolly a Linux user.” I think our two groups have very different meanings for the word open.
I wish we could come together on this issue. If the APIs to a platform are available, without the need to pony up cash, then the platform should be considered “open” by all. I know the Mac OS falls under this definition.
I do understand the Free Software Foundations concept of free. Since you can also download the source code to the core of Mac OS X, called Darwin, it is even more Free than Windows. But since almost no one has ever recompiled their Mac OS X kernel from the darwin sources it is not as Free as Linux.
iPhone TV commercials
I noticed the iPhone commercials end exactly the same way as each Utopia period ends.
I think that is interesting.
Lost Predictions
I’ve become a huge fan of Lost recently. I watched a smattering of seasons 1 and 2 and watched all of season 3. I really caught up on Lost by reading all of the epsiode synopses on Lostpedia.
During season 3 every time I would get angry about how an episode turned out, my boss would always remind me that it is the journey that is the reward.
Like any fan I have my predictions on how the series is going to progress. Since new episodes are a long way off, I am going to record them here.
It has been said there are three seasons left. I feel Locke’s last line at the end of season 3 is very telling, “Jack, you’re not supposed to do this!”. The flash forwards telling of jack’s demise into his own abyss, and his final, “We got to go back!” make it clear to me that season 4 will start on the island just after the phone call. Over the course of the season we will learn how correct Ben was in predicting the death of everyone on the island (Ben is prone to a little hyperbole). How Locke becomes the new leader of the others and how the Dharma Initiative regains control of the island.
Season four will end just where season 3 did. At that Airport, with Kate. But this time Jack will either send himself, or be sent, back to the time just before the phone call was made. Then season five starts with him not making that phone call. We progress through the entire season 5 with events just a little bit different for Jack to become the hero he is destined to become. This time he will be able to save everyone on the island.
This leaves season six. I predict a sort of clean up season explaining how the island works and other details not to crucial to the story.
I do hope Tom is still alive.
Megan’s New Room
This weekend I painted Megan’s room. A few months ago she and her mother picked out officially licensed Tinker Bell colors. It turned out real nice.

Megan’s Achievement
Just now, Megan sneezed five time in a row. She proudly proclaimed that it was the most she has ever done.
I said we should write it down and Megan agreed with me.

Catweasel and newer Macintoshes
I am currently using my Catweasel MK4 in my PowerMac G4 computer. The card is not compatible with the PowerMac G5 computers. The G5 does not provide the 5 volt power and signaling the card requires. It turns out the previous statement isn’t true. There are three types of PowerMac G5s: PCI, PCI-X and PCI Express. I just tested a Catweasel MK4 card in a PowerMac G5 PCI-X machine and the floppy I/O functions worked just fine. I did not test the SIDs or the keyboard/joystick functions.
The Catweasel MK4 is not a PCI Express card. So it work work in late model PowerMac G5s or any Mac Pro.
